This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows:

To determine whether there is any difference in mortality and morbidity following major abdominal surgery in patients treated postoperatively with CPAP versus standard care, which may include traditional oxygen delivery systems, physiotherapy and incentive spirometry.
