This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows:

The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate the evidence regarding the treatment of HZO in people with HIV infection.

Specific objectives

  • To determine the efficacy of different antiviral agents in the treatment of acute HZO with regard to resolution of skin lesions, reduction of viral shedding, and incidence of ocular complications.
  • To assess the efficacy of different treatment options (e.g. oral steroids, antidepressants, anticonvulsants, topical analgesics, and nerve blocks) in the management of post-herpetic neuralgia.
