This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows:

1. To evaluate the effect of combining behavioural support and medication to aid smoking cessation and to identify whether there are different effects depending on intensity of intervention, population treated, levels of compliance or treatment setting.

2. To evaluate the effect of providing more intensive behavioural support to people using medication.
