This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows:

To assess the effectiveness of as required analgesic administration schedules for management of post-operative pain in children and adults who have undergone surgery. The questions to be addressed are:

  1. Are 'as required' analgesic administration schedules effective for the treatment of post-operative pain in children who have undergone surgery?
  2. Are 'as required' analgesic administration schedules effective for the treatment of post-operative pain in adults who have undergone surgery?
  3. What adverse effects, if any, are associated with the use of 'as required' analgesic administration schedules as opposed to fixed schedule analgesic administration schedules for the treatment of post-operative pain?
  4. What adverse effects, if any, are associated with the use of 'fixed schedule' analgesic administration schedules as opposed to 'as required' analgesic administration schedules for the treatment of post-operative pain?
