Ulcerative colitis has a limited number of treatment options. When given by mouth in extended-release tablets, low molecular weight heparin provides benefit for treating patients with active colitis. When given subcutaneously (by syringe), neither low molecular weight heparins nor unfractionated heparin provide benefit for these patients. Extended-release heparin tablets should be used judiciously, if at all, to treat patients with ulcerative colitis because all current evidence supporting its use comes from a single, industry-funded study. However, extended release heparin tablets appear to be well tolerated.
