Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is characterised by chronic failure or absence of ovulation (anovulation) and excessive production of male hormones (hyperandrogenism) with the clinical manifestations of irregular menstrual cycles, infertility, hirsutism, and acne. This condition is the most common endocrinopathy in women, affecting approximately 5% to 10% of women of reproductive age. The aim of this review was to determine if the use of metformin, an insulin-sensitising agent, improves live birth and pregnancy rates for women with PCOS undergoing in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment. The review found no evidence that metformin treatment before or during assisted reproductive technique cycles improves live birth or pregnancy rates. The risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome was reduced with metformin.
