Kidney transplant recipients are at high risk of heart disease and dyslipidaemia further increases this risk. Statins have been shown to decrease cholesterol levels, cardiovascular events and mortality in the general population. The aim of this review was to investigate if a similar effect could be seen in kidney transplant patients. This review identified 16 studies enrolling 3229 patients. Compared to placebo, statins significantly reduced cholesterol and triglycerides, and tended to reduce cardiovascular events in kidney transplant recipients, but no effect has yet been demonstrated for mortality outcomes. Most of the data was derived from one large long-term study. Considering the significant impact of statins on all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in the general and predialysis populations, more studies are needed in kidney transplant patients. Adverse effects of statins were similar to that of placebo.
