Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for acute ischaemic stroke

There is little evidence that stroke patients benefit from hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a treatment designed to increase the supply of oxygen to the part of the brain affected by stroke and reduce the extent of irreversible damage. HBOT involves people breathing pure oxygen in a specially designed chamber (such as those used for deep sea divers with the bends). Our review found only six randomised trials involving 283 participants. Too few patients have been studied to say whether or not HBOT decreases the chance of dying and only three trials suggested any improvement in the ability to do everyday tasks. Overall, there is currently little evidence to support the use of HBOT for stroke patients.
