PART A 1b - Developmental outcomes
The review highlights the limited evidence about which specific drugs carry more risk than others to the neurodevelopment of children exposed in utero.
The first part of this review focuses on the neurodevelopmental outcomes of children exposed to antiepileptic drugs in utero. The results for the studies are conflicting, but most failed to find a detrimental effect of exposure to monotherapy with carbamazepine or phenytoin. In general, polytherapy exposure is associated with some poorer outcomes in neuropsychological or developmental testing, though the outcomes in terms of significant developmental delay or schooling problems are not well studied.
