Oral sumatriptan for acute migraine

Sumatriptan is one of a class of drugs (collectively referred to as 'triptans') developed specifically to treat migraine headaches. The review found that sumatriptan tablets taken by mouth were significantly more effective than a placebo pill at relieving migraine headache pain within 2 hours. The evidence was strongest for the 100-mg dose, but lower doses (50 mg, 25 mg) were also effective. Minor side effects were common, but sumatriptan was well tolerated overall. Newer triptan drugs (rizatriptan, naratriptan, zolmitriptan, almotriptan, eletriptan) were similar to sumatriptan in head-to-head comparisons. One drug commonly used to treat migraine, a combination of ergotamine and caffeine, was significantly less effective than sumatriptan.
