Droperidol for schizophrenia

People with acute and serious mental illnesses may become very disturbed and display aggressive, dangerous behaviour. Such emergency situations are managed with clinical skill, common sense and, possibly medication. Droperidol is one of the drugs used. Since only a few, small trials have evaluated its use, no firm conclusions can be drawn regarding its effects. Larger trials would be desirable, however, in 2001 the manufacturers, Janssen-Cilag Ltd, voluntarily withdrew oral droperidol due to safety concerns regarding cardiac problems in long-term use. Injectable forms were withdrawn for commercial reasons, so worldwide stocks of intramuscular droperidol are running low.
